The San Francisco Symphony has been playing Adams's music for 30 years, and its familiarity with his idiom shows in the mastery of these recordings. When they first appeared, these examples of of Adams's harmonically rich minimalism seemed brash, but conductor Michael Tilson Thomas rounds all their edges and brings out their subtlety. Short Ride could have been a little more brash, but Harmonielehre is beautifully conveyed.
