An earlier Orchestra of the Swan disc (AV2230) paired Gal's and Schumann's Third Symphonies. Another by the Northern Sinfonia (AV2224) coupled Gal's First with Schubert's Sixth. The Viennese-born Gal (1890-1987) is worth getting to know, anachcronistic though his debts to Richard Strauss, Mahler and Brahms might seem to be in the Fourth Symphony, written as recently as 1974. But it is well-made music and the Swan does it proud, giving also a spruce and eloquent performance of Schumann's Second.
