BACH St John Passion Portland Baroque Orch, cond Monica Huggett Avie AV 2236
Avie Records
This period-style performance uses chamber-scale forces, but stops short of the dogma of one singer or instrument per part. Instead, there is a chorus of a dozen, divided into six "concertists", who take the solo roles and arias, and six "ripienists". The orchestra is of similar proportions. Huggett, directing from the leader's desk, offers a clean reading that, depsite being on the pacy side, feels informed with a certain spirituality. The players of the Portland Baroque Orchestra give a stylish account of themselves. The Evangelist, Charles Daniels, delivers his lines with authority and intense dramatic involvement, while Joshua Hopkins balances the role of Jesus well, his piety never cloying.
