This reissue of a 1999 recording is a compelling account that can hold its own against any rivals. Jeannette Sorrell takes an upapologetically grand approach to the 400-year-old work, one that has no truck with the fashionalbe one-singer-to-a-part method. The tenors Ian Honeyman and Gareth Morrell are resplendent in the exultant Gloria of the Magnificat and deeply moving, with a third tenor, Robert Psurny, in the work's emotional core, Duo Seraphim. The choral singing is rhythmically incisive and the instrumental colours blaze brilliantly.
